1. Acceptance of Terms
By accessing and using Toulmin Lab (the "Service"), you accept and agree to be bound by these Terms of Service. These terms constitute a legally binding agreement between you and Toulmin Lab.
If you are using the Service on behalf of an educational institution or organization, you represent that you have the authority to bind that entity to these terms.
If you do not agree to these terms, you must not access or use the Service.
2. Description of Service
Toulmin Lab is an online platform that enables users to create, analyze, visualize, and share structured arguments using the Toulmin model of argumentation.
The Service includes:
• A web-based argument builder with visual diagram generation • Export functionality (PNG, JPG, PDF formats) • An AI-powered coaching feature to guide argument development • Cloud storage for your arguments and diagrams
We reserve the right to modify, suspend, or discontinue any aspect of the Service at any time, with or without notice.
3. User Accounts and Authentication
To use the Service, you must create an account using Google authentication (via Firebase Auth). By creating an account, you agree to:
Provide accurate and complete information during registration.
Maintain the security and confidentiality of your account credentials.
Notify us immediately of any unauthorized use of your account.
Be responsible for all activities that occur under your account.
We reserve the right to suspend or terminate accounts that violate these terms or engage in abusive behavior.
4. License to Use the Service
Subject to your compliance with these terms, we grant you a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to access and use Toulmin Lab for personal, educational, and non-commercial purposes.
This license does NOT include the right to:
• Modify, copy, or create derivative works of the Service • Use the Service for commercial purposes without authorization • Reverse engineer, decompile, or disassemble any software • Remove or modify any proprietary notices • Use automated systems (bots, scrapers) to access the Service
We reserve all rights not expressly granted in these terms.
5. User Content and Intellectual Property
You retain all ownership rights to the arguments, diagrams, and content you create using Toulmin Lab ("User Content").
License to Us: By creating content on the Service, you grant Toulmin Lab a limited, worldwide, non-exclusive license to store, display, process, and transmit your User Content solely as necessary to provide the Service to you. This includes making backup copies and processing content through our AI features when you choose to use them.
Your Responsibilities: You are solely responsible for your User Content. You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights to the content you submit and that your content does not violate any third-party rights or applicable laws.
Our Content: All other content, features, and functionality of the Service (including but not limited to software, text, displays, images, and the Toulmin Lab name and logo) are owned by Toulmin Lab and are protected by copyright, trademark, and other intellectual property laws.
6. AI-Powered Features and Disclaimer
The AI Coach feature uses artificial intelligence (Google's Gemini AI models) to provide suggestions and guidance for building arguments.
No Guarantee of Accuracy: AI-generated suggestions and responses may contain errors, inaccuracies, or biases. We do not guarantee the accuracy, completeness, or reliability of any AI-generated content.
Not Professional Advice: The AI Coach does not provide professional, academic, legal, or any other form of expert advice. It is a tool to help you develop your own thinking and should not be relied upon as a substitute for professional judgment.
Your Responsibility: You are solely responsible for reviewing, verifying, and using any AI-generated suggestions. You should always apply critical thinking and consult appropriate expert sources for important decisions.
Educational Use: The AI Coach is designed as an educational tool to help users learn and practice the Toulmin method. It should be used as a supplement to, not a replacement for, traditional instruction.
7. Prohibited Conduct
You agree NOT to use the Service to:
Violate any applicable laws, regulations, or third-party rights.
Harass, abuse, threaten, or harm others.
Impersonate any person or entity, or falsely represent your affiliation.
Submit content that is illegal, offensive, defamatory, or infringes on intellectual property rights.
Attempt to gain unauthorized access to the Service, user accounts, or systems.
Interfere with or disrupt the Service's operation or servers.
Use automated systems (bots, scrapers) to access or collect data from the Service.
Exceed reasonable usage limits or attempt to abuse the AI coaching feature.
Reverse engineer, decompile, or attempt to extract source code.
Resell, redistribute, or commercialize the Service without authorization.
Violation of these prohibitions may result in immediate account suspension or termination.
8. Acceptable Use and AI Fair Use
The AI Coach feature is provided for legitimate educational use. You agree to:
Use the AI Coach in good faith for learning and developing argumentation skills.
Respect the usage quotas and rate limits designed to ensure fair access for all users.
Not attempt to circumvent technical limitations or abuse the AI features.
Not use the Service to generate content for prohibited purposes or in violation of any applicable laws.
We reserve the right to adjust usage quotas, implement rate limiting, or restrict access to AI features to prevent abuse and ensure service availability for all users.
9. Analytics, Cookies, and Privacy
Our use of cookies, analytics, and your personal data is governed by our Privacy Policy.
Opt-In Analytics: Analytics collection requires your explicit consent. You can accept or reject analytics when prompted and change your choice at any time via Cookie Settings in the footer.
Essential vs. Optional: Some cookies (such as authentication session cookies) are essential and required for the Service to function. Analytics cookies are optional and only activate with your consent.

11. Limitation of Liability
TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, TOULMIN LAB SHALL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR ANY LOSS OF PROFITS, DATA, USE, OR GOODWILL ARISING FROM:
• Your use of or inability to use the Service • Any unauthorized access to or alteration of your content • Any errors, omissions, or inaccuracies in AI-generated content • Any interruption or cessation of the Service • Any conduct or content of third parties on the Service
Our total liability for any claims related to the Service is limited to the amount you paid to use the Service in the past twelve months (or $100 if you haven't paid anything).
Some jurisdictions do not allow certain liability limitations, so some of the above limitations may not apply to you.
12. Changes to Terms
We reserve the right to modify these Terms of Service at any time.
Notification: We will notify users of material changes by posting the updated terms on this page and updating the 'Last updated' date. For significant changes, we may also send an email notification.
